A Holiday Read- It is Not

Gentlemen, After our autobiographical novel last month glorifying a soldier's heroics in battle I sought a shift in our intellectual tenor. But I also sought an answer. I sought a book that could uncover a hidden mystery, an unsolved mystery lying dormant somewhere in grown men, that may explain why we so enthusiastically march off to battle like backyard children of yore? To my surprise I selected another book of war! In my defense, I hasten to say this novel has no literary compare. If you don't believe me trust Ernest Hemmingway when he acclaimed; "It is one of the finest books of our literature." This time tested classic speaks to every man's fantasies of war leaving the reader checking his pulse and feeling the weight and fate of courage in the moment. I was seeking a short well written story that could make your guts stand at attention. A story that confronts the sudden discovery of reality vs. imagined fantasy; obeying orders vs. personal judgement; the value of honor or a shallow grave. This well acclaimed novel follows a young man's naivety on a journey as he keeps cadence with his zeal and hubris marching toward battle while his fear lies in ambush. Our novel is a 250 page turner written in 1893. Perhaps like me, it will be a re-read. I look forward to our book discussion at The Farmhouse, January, 30th, 6ish. Go forth you Seekers of the written word. I hope you enjoy "The Red Badge of Courage." Found in a bookstore near you for a couple of bucks. I remain to the end, Pompous de la Pundit
