Moonwalking with Einstein

Men of superior intellect and codpiece,

A great meeting of the minds took place not long ago in a chamber rich in parchment from all genres, authors, and time periods.  Yes, 5 great minds came together challenging the very depths of their memories in a battle of cognitive fury with one objective in mind, winning a parchment of vast knowledge and understanding!  Bringing unity to this great "cerebrawl," I traveled across our great country to give our sixth member a shot at the memory olympics.  After careful computation, the results are in with the winner of each category as follows:

Poetry: Von Pluma
Playing Cards: Von Pluma
Word List Recall: De Papel
Word Sequence: De Papel

Cheers to both Pluma and Papel on winning their categories!  There were plenty of tight calls in each category and you all fought like fuckin honey badgers!  Having tallied all the points together, one particular Man of the Parchment stood above the rest, and that man is Count Lapiz von Pluma!  Von Pluma, your parchment should be arriving shortly if you have not already received it.  Congratulations.  It was truly an honor to witness such great minds being pushed to their limits.  I hope that our newest parchment, "Moonwalking with Einstein" can help our great minds attain new heights never though possible.

GO FORTH!

It is with great humility that I post my gratitude to Master Lieb for his outstanding orchestration of such a masterful and memorable (pun intended) activity. My parchment arrived unscathed with the upper right corner bent ever so slightly, imploring me to sink my proverbial teeth into its memorization techniques and story.

In closing, to avoid being one of the miserable ones, just remember:

Intelligence is the wife,
imagination is the mistress,
memory is the servant.

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much.

THE MUSEUM OF MANLINESS

Men, I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the pages of this latest parchment. As you are all aware, we as a group, strive to be Renaissance men; men superior in all aspects of manliness, both mental and physical. As we digest the pages Foer has set before us, it is clear our already impressive intellectual prowess will no doubt eclipse that of mere geniuses. Now, to round out this council and avoid a strictly intellectual gain, I would like to invite you all to travel to a place rich in manly history and one which Foer himself mentions while traveling to Kutztown University thustly, "I thought that sounded like something I didn't want to die without having seen." You guessed it, I would like to tour the York Barbel Weightlifting Hall of Fame and Museum! Here is a rough itinerary of the day's proceedings:

Saturday high noon(date TBD)
We all embark in one vehicular to a hidden gem called The Cove in York. We grab a seat at the smoker friendly whiskey bar (yes, they have a bar dedicated to whiskey!) and imbibe on some spirits while enjoying a book discussion. Depending on the weather, we may also wish to sit outside on the deck to enjoy our parchment and cigar. From there, we sober up with a trip to York Barbel and enjoy some history and get inspired to pump some iron! Hopefully the alcohol has run its course and we enjoy a leisurely trip back to H-burg or explore more of York, PA. Depending on how we feel, we can all come back to my place for a nightcap and continue discussions on which air rifle to purchase or get back to our "normal" lives.

Here are some possible Saturday options. Lets try to agree on a date. March 23, April 6, April 13, April 27.

P.S. At the Cove, we may also wish to order their famous 80oz beer tower or even sit at one of their 2 beer tables where we can pour our own drafts!

A masterfully conceived book adventure and perfect quarters for our review. In a word; Dexter. Well played Master Lieb.

Love the idea Master Lieb! May I had that we should all consume a bottle of Muscle Milk before heading to the museum! I'm sure coxcomb L. Gabler could get us some of the good stuff at a discount rate!

I am available on all dates except Apr 13th.

Go forth...

Well done indeed master lieb! I can make any of the suggested dates work and only need to adjust my reading speed accordingly.

I would like to have the meeting sooner rather than later. I am ok with any of those dates. That being typed it looks like a Mantooth event on the 23rd? It's not a big book. Let's get it done Boyezz.

Hey there gentlemen,

I am looking forward to my first MOP meeting in quite some time. The wisdom imparted will be beyond measure. It is still a little hard to 100% commit to a weekend of travel due to my fragile physical (of course not mental) state; however, any one of those dates should be doable. If I had to pick, I would go with the 23rd, for no particular reason. We will definitely be in south central PA Easter weekend so just wondering if Holy Saturday is an option....I know that might be busy, impossible for some due to other plans, and possibly immoral but I just thought I would throw that out there.

Master Lieb Schmear said...

Well, I have heard from all but von Pluma and it looks like the 23rd is a go! Danny, I am fine with doing Easter Saturday if you all think the coxcombs will allow it. Is that some sort of holy day where we can't drink and stuff?? So, lets just take one last vote...23rd or 30th? There will perhaps be a muscle milk derived cocktail when we return from our adventures on Saturday Lord Lloyd! Good call. Go forth!

Master Lieb Schmear said...

P.S. Who currently has the holy box of MOP artifacts?

Lord Lloyd de Papel said...

I believe Pompous possesses the Great Box of Truth, but I can't say with certainty.

Pompous de la Pundit said...

I can with say with certainty I have the meeting paraphernalia. Memory lessons from the book apparantly have served you well LL.

Pompous de la Pundit said...

Ooops i forgot; i am ok and ready to go on the 23rd

Gents, I will not be able to attend the meeting, as you may have guessed. Alas. However, I will never think of cottage cheese without picturing it in a kiddie pool in the driveway at 8 Farmhouse Lane with Claudia Shiffer swimming in it, so I guess life is a give-and-take. Also, I'm pleased that I correctly surmised of Lieb's plan to go to the manly destination upon first mention in the parchment. Well played, Lieb, well played indeed.

Wish I could join you all. Hopefully soon. Finally, if anyone is curious as to why I put "to avoid being one of in my initial comment to this thread, it is because that delectable quote comes from the great writer of parchment, Victor Hugo.

Godspeed.

Ok, lets make it the 23rd. That still okay with everyone?

Works for me Master S. I look forward to visiting the fine city of York. The weather for Saturday is partly cloudy, 10% chance of the wet stuff, and 100% chance of wisdom regarding Barbels. Would be nice to have the meeting outside.

Count Lapiz Von Pluma said...

Because that stretch of 83 through York serves as a memory palace for me, I'll be there in my mind's eye.

Pompous de la Pundit said...

The 23rd is fine; but let's settle on a time. I am looking forward to some heavy mental and physical lifting. I am tired of feeling small.

Danny Lyons said...

The 23rd works. Looking forward to some 83 south reminiscing. We will come home Friday night so just let me know a time and it should work. Looking forward to the workout!

Lord Lloyd de Papel said...

Master S - anymore details about Saturday? Specifically what time you think we should leave for York? Noonish?

Master Lieb Schmear said...

So, is everyone down for meeting at Tyson's around 11:30 and letting the Rogue escort us to the city of York?

Master Lieb Schmear said...

Anyone interested in doing this before we depart tomorrow??

That competition would be fun to attend, and just as nerdy as a memory competition, but I don't want to cram too much in and we wouldn't be able to do the whole thing (that's what she said). So I don't think that is in the cards but I'm fine with leaving my place at 1130

Back spasms and all The Cove's menue and bourbon smoke room was the perfect venue for a deceptively intriging read and memorable book discussion. Somehow after the documented heavy lifting at the York Weightlifting Museum I felt like a new coxcomb. It seems only right and proper to have our photo in the Museum. Next visit!

Gents, this article reminded me of Master Lieb's book choice nary one year past. The article talks about how our penchant to "document" the world through the lens of a camera actually inhibits our ability to remember things. The author cites an experiment where kids were given a camera at a museum and told to photograph some pieces of art and not others. In later recall tests, students remembered the objects they did not photograph more than those they did. Like we learned in Moonwalking, now that information is so readily available, we have crutches to remember things (phone numbers, addresses, facts, definitions) at our fingertips. So we don't remember them. But in the old days, people had to recite stories to keep them in their memory banks. So who was smarter? Someone from Ancient Greece who could recite The Odyssey or someone from today who can write a paper synthesizing all Greek literature in an afternoon using Google? To the point of this article, are our perceptions of reality being altered by the incessant photographing taking place?

Here's the article: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/technology/2013/12/how-camera-phones-modify-our-memories/7829/
